Over the Hill

Well, I guess it's all downhill from here, folks!

I hit the big 4 - 0 a few days ago.

In running, that elevates me to "Master" status (which means I now might have twice as much luck bringing home a prize from the local 5k/10k with 40 people registered, but
I still don't get my own porta potty, or even senior discount when I register for the Turkey Trot!).

Still, it is occasion enough to celebrate.

And celebrate I did!

I know all three of you still reading this blog are sick and tired of my trail running photos, but I had to share a few more. Because my Birthday run was RAD. (And really, I enjoy taking pictures almost as much as running.)

Cooper Creek has some amazing colors in the fall.
It is the one time of year where it is not "just" green! (but it's still mostly green)

A friend and I had a really fun run.

Although I am trying to stay under 140 bpm with heart rate training, I let it go for the day and allowed myself to feel the push of running fairly hard (for me at the moment!) up and down the rolling hills.

She humored me and stopped several times on the way back while I took pictures and caught some video.

And we laughed about things old ladies  "Master runners" talk about...
At one point, reviewing a photo on the trail, I mentioned, "Man. My butt got big!"
To which she replied, quite matter-of-factly, "You turned forty."
I consoled myself (celebrated the joy) of the 40 year old butt later with a second drive-through coffee for the day.

And what's a birthday without gifts?

Some cool new things...

My husband bought me a tripod for $6.99. (He didn't realize that was his birthday gift to me- it just worked out that way!)

It's so cool, because it can wrap around branches or I can set it on the ground.

I also got a Garmin Forerunner 220 a few weeks ago as an "early gift" . This new toy did pretty well for GPS reception and distance on our wooded trail run.

You can see where I forgot to turn it back on after we started running (straight line). I considered the Fenix2 because of the altimeter and battery life, But I just don't think I will ever be running 100 milers, so this works for me.

And, unexpectedly, a package arrived on my very birthday!

I had entered a contest on Jeff Gallup's blog, (Which you all should be following!!), and won a pair of Pearl Izumi Flash shorts.

The style and fit are flattering (I think) . There's only one pocket, but that's all I need because of my hydration vest.

Do you drink drive though coffee? More than once a day?

Are there any running gadgets on your wish list?

  1. Happy birthday! You look about 14 in that picture - they might ask for ID before giving you your masters awards ;-)

    2. Nah, she's not 14 in that picture, just being a 14 year old playing with the Instagram filters on her new smartphone!

    3. Actually, I don't have an Instagram account (I prefer the format on G+) but my camera has filters on it! I still use my computer to do most lighting changes.
If you want to know the truth, I simply figured out that if I stretch my face up and down most of the wrinkles go away ;)

  5. Happy Birthday! Would have thought you were at least younger than me. And, well, if it helps, I'v been racing CX for a couple years now as a "masters"...but we earn that badge a little earlier.

I recently got a Garmin 215 for mine, wanted that one because it is simple and has the HR monitor. And I always want shoes!!

  7. Happy birthday! I like my Garmin Forerunner 220 except that the battery died during my 50K. It didn't die when I took even longer to run my last one so I think it might be because I wore a HRM, but I'm not sure yet. Handy new tripod!

    1. That's too bad about the battery dying. I wonder if you also had your phone tracking you? I don't actually know much about this stuff, but you would think it would last through a 50k !

  10. Hey gorgeous girl! Happy Birthday! You look beautiful as always. Maybe more than ever! I love this tripod. I want one! I take photos with my phone but I really want something to take more trail shots...haven't looked into the pricing on those go pros but I want one!! Can't wait to see what you do with this. :) and I don't get sick of your pics...I feel like people are sick of mine though...trails every day! :)

  11. Happy Belated birthday! Your legs are amazing! Yay for the Forerunner 220. I love that watch. I've never been into gadgets, but last year I pestered my husband like a demanding two-year-old and I got it for Christmas :) I drink decaf coffee occasionally. I think coffee smells delicious, but the caffeine gives me a massive headache. Hope I am as strong and my legs are as sexy as yours for my 40th birthday. Oh, and I love your trail pictures.

  13. That's still one mighty pretty corner of the world, and it's still always inspiring to see such scenery for those of us who live in urban jungles. It's great to see you back on the trails. And a Happy Birthday, I have heard the 40's are the new 30's ;)

I can't take it easy on the competition here, when some of the top ladies 5-50k are in their 50's! *sigh*.. It just gets harder for a while!

  15. Happy Birthday! I must be honest I'm not sure if I wished you happy birthday somewhere already or not. Shame on me...:) I love your trail photos and will never get tired of looking at them.
We don't have many nice drive through spots for coffee here by me so I have never had a drive through coffee...
On my list is a Go Pro camera.

    1. No worries- I tried to hide my birthday on facebook, but did a poor job. ☺

It's probably best, Johann, that you don't have many drive through options there in SA! Still, I can't believe you've never had one.
You and me both are waiting for that Go Pro!

If by "sick and tired" of your trail run photos you mean "incredibly jealous but glad to at least be able to look at such gorgeous photos", then yes, I'm sick and tired of them. ;-)

You look great in the shorts!

  20. Happy birthday!!! And I don't think I could ever get tired of your trail pictures.

  21. Think I already wished you happy birtg'day on Twitter :)
Great gifts. Garmin, shorts and tripod - what more do you need to run? You've already got the camera and heaps of tops like most women.

The first time I ever saw drive-through coffee was in the US. We didn't have it hear (unless you count Maccas). Actually, Maccas is advertising their "good" coffee for drive-though.

Gadgets I wouldn't mind are a Garmin 920XT but they're $550 down here. For the bike, "power meter" pedals - expensive too. A dedicated bike Garmin :) BTW, hope you manage to collect heaps of Masters' Bling in 2015 old girl.

    ReplyDelete
  22. (At the risk of sounding snobby) I don't count McD's! Lol
I think the 920 is about the same $ here. It's tempting, but that price tag is a game-stopper!

I have to say you look pretty dang good for being 7 months older than me ;)
I actually thought that last year too though :))

  30. Just wanted to say a belated happy birthday and mention it's not ALL downhill from here - I'm 46 and just started running about a year ago, so you're still further uphill than me! ;-) I finally started training with a HRM because I also need some runs when a HR less than 140. I've been enjoying your blog so far, thanks for sharing!
