Goals

Goals
I'm not really sure which direction I will go with running right now. In a way that's nice, but knowing myself it won't last long. :)

I miss my long runs, and am ready to get back into training that lasts a little longer than an hour and a half.

There is something pulling me towards the trails. I don't know if it is because they work so many different muscles/tendons/ligaments, or because of their beauty and the appeal of new routes. Or, maybe it's because pace matters so little off the road and into the wilds.

I did a little mapping of gravel road "trails" close to home, and there are a few great looking runs, but I can't do them alone. They take a person deep into the BLM and no one would hear me scream if a cougar (or a 2-legged predator) attacked. But, man would I love to get a few people to join me! Maybe I need to host a group run. Bribery!?

In the meantime I joined a few virtual challenges (a first for me). Michael is hosting a "5k a day" challenge for the month of December. So far, so good....What I didn't think about was how tired my legs would be after a week off. A day of rest sounds pretty good, but so far my legs haven't fallen off yet!

Also, I joined up with a "5 by the 5th" challenge hosted by Mommy Run Fast and Run to the Finish. There are some prizes involved, but this is more of a reason to connect with other bloggers and have fun..and maybe a good excuse for some speedwork :).

Off to town tomorrow to volunteer as a race marshal! Hope to see some friends at the local Jingle bells 5k, 8k, 12k. Volunteering at races is fun, and it will give me chance to scout a new course. Win-win!

Are you racing a Jingle Bells race?

If you missed my giveaway, today's the last day!

  1. I would love to join you on the trails. It's just a long drive. Trail running is so different from road running. It's more low-key and relaxing. Just peaceful.
Have fun race marshall-ing. Do you get a badge?

  2. Trails scare me because I am not a fan of critters. Walking on trails with people...now that I can do! I hope you find a group. Enjoy your challenges!!

    2. It is amazing how many situations a pair of nun-chucks (Michaelangelo-style) can solve on the trails. Just sayin'.

  3. Sounds like the clock and emphasis on pace 5k's requires has you a little jaded, go hit the trails and get your long, easy runs in!!!! Also gives you plenty of time to think about what's next - what a fun time, fit and healthy and spoiled for choice! :) Wish I had trails on my doorstep, I have green belts but no trails :(

  4. Thanks for sharing about the 5k/ 5mile series, Raina! I have a feeling I'll be in your shoes after this January marathon... I have no races on my calendar yet beyond that point. I'll probably take a little break, and then figure out which direction to go next. Enjoy those trail runs!

  5. I felt the same way after my 5Ks. I needed slower runs. I have been doing a lot of them lately, listening to podcasts or music. Trail running will be awesome for you. But yes, you need to be careful out there. Part of the reason why I don't run trails more often is because I don't want to be in the woods by myself. Even on the bike trail today I had a weird encounter with a guy who exposed himself. Freaked me out! So yes, resist the temptation! Excited for all your challenges.

  6. I understand the trail safety issue. I hope you can find some trail running buddies! There's something really fun about running in the woods.

    1. It is fun Tina, and I have the blessing of living near some beautiful spots! Think I have a friend or two who might like to come this way for a new route. :)

  7. Funny you mention trail safety, as I had to turn around the other day because of an organized hunting event on the very trails I ran on! Um, yikes!!

Have a great time race marshaling tomorrow:)

  8. Checking in on you after a blog break! First off, congrats on that killer 5K you did a couple of weeks ago. You ROCK!

Next weekend is our local "Reindeer Roundup." I plan on doing the 10K, and my oldest is going to run the 5K with my FIL's girlfriend (they will be visiting for the holidays). I'm excited to see how it all plays out!

And yes, gotta be safe on those trails! I have a friend whose husband is now a trail runner (after hitting sub-3 in the marathon, getting bored, and looking for something new and exciting...) and he is always falling and taking tumbles and such. Don't want to be alone out there if a doozy happens, yk? Take care!

  9. I love trail running. Our trails aren't very remote or I would carry made pepper spray. Amazon has a model for joggers for under $10. Or I would use that as an excuse to get a big dog that could run with me :-). I have come across some big dogs not on leashes in the woods, but luckily haven't been bitten yet.

    1. Oh, I am not sure i could run with a dog. But besides a human, that's probably the best advice.

  11. Trail running is so incredibly calm and peaceful; a whole different world than the road racers. I remember standing at the start of the Leadville Heavy Half, looking around, and just laughed inside at the sight because there were no pace groups, no Garmins looking for satellites, and it was just a "scruffy" bunch of people. I love it! I can foresee me being a total trail runner in the near future, we have so many options here in Colorado....but I also don't like really close to the trails so gas costs to get them is a bit much. Anyway, looking forward to your trail adventures...and I like Mike's idea of a dog :).

No Jingle Bell race for me, I am tapped out of racing for the year. Hope you had a great time volunteering!

    1. I can imagine banding with a bunch of scruffy people. I will still have on both my watches though :) I understand about gas...but ironically, I run the trails when I get to Eugene because there is more "traffic". Hope you enjoy some RnR for the rest of the running year :)

  12. Excited for you to join the 13 in 2013 challenge!

-I know what you mean about running on trails where no will hear you if something attacked you. I have a trail by my house that has wild animals roaming around but the hills on this trail are amazing, sometimes I run it alone, sometimes I'll turn into a scaredy cat and won't go. lol

    1. I am the same way. I can be brave, but when I get in deep on a road, i always start to think about the "what-ifs" and how I should have a buddy. Working on it!

  13. Trail running is my first love. One of my New Year's Resolutions will be to swallow my shyness (and my slowness) and go for a trail run with the Boulder Trail Runners club. Supposedly they have all speeds, but that's relative in Boulder.

I signed up for the Eugene Marathon, Raina. My friends Kathy and Cynthia will be there for sure as well. Will we get to meet you? :^)
