Scheduled Breaks, Races, and other Random Updates

  • 5Ks happen on Thanksgiving!  Is this an American way of justifying gluttony?? I like my pie cheesecake, so I ran one--- Didn't come near cracking the top three, but I had a good race (report coming soon), and had a GREAT time playing with my boys afterwards at a swim park. Much needed fun together!
  • This is a week off of running for me. FIRST time I have ever scheduled a week off (not counting after a marathon- but that has never been more than 6 days). Really, I have no idea if I can even make it that long. In the last few months I have been running steadily 6-7 days a week, but about 8 runs a week.
  • I plan to spend some time on my bike and took the boys for a ride today, (oldest on his bike, two youngest in a trailer). Five miles on a bike is just not enough to satisfy my adrenaline addiction! Still, I was thankful for a chance to get outdoors with NO rain.

Have I mentioned it's been wet in western Oregon? This part of Dorris Ranch is closed off until further notice.
  • Looking at a possible winter trail race...Crazy people do that type of thing, don't they?
  • Thanksgiving here was an AWESOME, multi-family feast. Our contributions were green bean casserole, rolls, 2 cheesecakes (chocolate/coffee & sour cream w/blackberry), and a veggie tray. My proudest moment was when my oldest son read his half-page report about why the Pilgrims came to Plymouth. God has been so good to us this year, and always.
  • There is going to be a giveaway here soon. I've never done one before, so I'm kind of excited about it!
  • I am on twitter now @Raina_runs.  Please come find me!!!!  Help me figure out what I am doing? J

Have you ever taken a scheduled run break?
What is your favorite Thanksgiving dish?
Did you race in a Turkey trot or other Thanksgiving race?

  1. a whole week off....I think I would have a hard time with that....I dont have a bike so right now I would not consider taking that many days off...I would go crazy...

favorite thanksgiving dish used to be the turkey with cranneberries!

    1. Happy Thanksgiving Caroline! Already I am scheming to run tomorrow. But I keep reminding myself that all the books say it won't affect training for up to a week.

  2. Probably the funniest line I've read in all of the Thanksgiving reports ... "Is this an American way of justifying gluttony??" ... so true! Hope you and your family had a great holiday - I always enjoy, and learn a lot, from your blog!

  3. Enjoy your week off. We have a Christmas tradition with cheesecakes. My dad and I always make one together. :) Also wanted to mention I got a strange email on Thanksgiving saying you posted a video for me on Twitter. I couldn't open it or figure out where it was in Twitter but then a friend said she got the same message except from me and soon after that her fb page was setting up groups and sending messages that weren't from her. I just thought I'd give you a heads up. Let me know if you get anything strange from me. :)

    1. Thanks for finding me, Carissa!
Unfortunately, I had to change all my passwords because I think I got hacked- or some malware.

  4. Enjoy the week off. Expect some taper niggles a couple days in. I've taken 5 days off the last three weeks in a row for various reason and my legs are confused :-)

    1. I read an interesting post on that recently. How the healing of rest can cause some muscle pains/aches when you are running less.

  5. I think it's good to take scheduled breaks. Of course it's always easier to say that than actually do...
Glad you had a great Thanksgiving! :) And yes, people do run trail races in the winter. Do it!!!

  6. Sometimes I take short breaks. With all of that running, you must be running a lot of miles! The cheesecake flavors both sound really good. I wish I could make cheesecake. I tried once - not good!

  7. I don't generally schedule time off. At some point something happens that requires several days off. Sick kids, sick me, or something else. This summer I took almost a week off when we were moving. That was a crazy time! Anyway, I'm excited to read your RP! I had to miss my turkey trot due to illness, so I'm living vicariously through you. ;) Happy thanksgiving!

    1. I don't usually take time off for anything except injury, so this is a little bit of what I consider a preventative rest period. I'll be ready to go hard again as soon as I get back.
      Happy Thanksgiving!!

  8. I think this forced rest will serve you well Raina. Interested to see how you feel when you come back. Some people feel amazing after a week off and completely recharged mentally and physically:)

    1. I have no doubt I will be recharged!! Already ready to run a 20 miler!! The mental part is a big piece to why I am doing it, but I just would like to see a bit where my fitness / HR is when I return after a week.

  9. I'm not sure either my kids or myself would make it through a week of no running, well it wouldn't be pretty that's for sure ;) If you're doing it then you must need it so good for you for having the sense to recognize it. I'm only 7 weeks out from my marathon and I'm already getting nervous about the enforced rest Coach Doug is going to insist on, will have to hit the pool instead :)

    1. Not sure I actually NEED it (not injured), but I am experimenting on myself- based on this article
Trust me. My family is ready for me to start running again.

  10. I made me own "turkey trot" this year. There was one in Manzanita, but I woke up with an awful stomach ache and figured I should just run on my own because I didn't know how far I would be able to go. I was able to eeeek out a touch over 4 miles, but it didn't feel pretty at all. At least I earned one of my desserts!

I have too many favorite dishes...I love stuffing with gravy on top of it and fresh rolls. I also love my pumpkin pie! Pumpkin cheesecake is good too!

    1. That beach run DID earn a desert! Beach runs are hard.
You keep making me hungry with the instagrams of fish and chips!!!

  11. I am so glad you had a wonderful holiday and can't wait for the race report. You are always so fast!! You are smart to take a week off if you are feeling the need for it. I had a big chunk of 'scaled back' time (some planned, some not) and am feeling SO much stronger and refreshed. Enjoy the down time and the family time. :)

  13. Running breaks- ewwwww. I call that being grounded. I know they are good for me, blah, blah, blah, but I think I am a little bit of an endorphin junky. LOL. Looking foward to your RR, too!

  15. I hope you had a really wonderful Thanksgiving. =)
    That is some mud!!
I hope you enjoy your week's running rest, and don't go bonkers.

    To answer your questions:
    - I am currently on a run break
    - My favourite dish is probably sweet potato casserole. I make it really really evil. =)
    - I didn't run a race, but I did go on a walk with the 7yo to the park. =)

Also, custard is Birds Eye Custard. It's an English dessert thing. You put it on cake, apple pie, bananas,, whatever. You put 2 Tbsp custard mix in a microwaveable container. Add 2 Tbsp sugar. Add a small amount of milk and mix until smooth. Add another 1.75 - 2 cups milk depending on how thick you want it. Microwave a couple of minutes. Pour on dessert of your choice. Yum.
Fish fingers and custard do *not* go together. Unless you're Doctor Who. =)

  17. Happy belated Thanksgiving!

Even though I'm historically not so good at following my own advice, scheduled breaks is the way to go. Every time I've had an unscheduled break, I end up benefitting from it:)

    Enjoy!

    1. Thanks I hope so! I tend to try to power through this time of year, and I think that's what has gotten me in trouble with the spring marathon in the past.

  18. I'm a few days behind but sounds like you are on to something nice with a scheduled break. I read somewhere that many top athletes do this once or twice a year. No injury- just scheduled time off. I may need to get in on that too. After this Saturday's marathon I know I will be ready for a little break!
